The First Board Meeting Successfully Held for the Alliance of Design and Art Schools

     On November 3rd, 2017, the first board meeting for the Alliance of Design and Art Schools (ADAS) was successfully held in Northwestern Normal University, Dunhuang College. The ADAS was jointly established by Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai (BITZH) and Northwestern Normal University, Dunhuang College (NNUDC). The attendees of the meeting include Prof. Robert Jensen from the Art and Visual Design department of University of Kentucky, HuajingXiuMaske, Dean of the University of Kentucky China Office, Prof. Renee Covalucci from Lesley University, Kevin Zhen, Vice President of BITZH and Weige Tian, President of NNUDC etc.


     President Tian firstly expressed his greatest welcome to the attendees and gave an overall introduction to Northwestern Normal University, Dunhuang College to the audience. NNUDC was founded in June, 2014 and is a renowned university in Gansu province, which offers full-time bachelor’s degree. NNUDC features fivemajors, which are fine arts, dance performance, animation, tourism management and oil painting, and recruits a total of 448 students currently. Tian emphasized that ADAS provides aopen platform for universities, both domestic and abroad, to connect and exchange ideas on design and art. In the meanwhile, ADAS provides NNUDC a great channel to spread Dunhuang culture and Chinese folk art. From the perspective of Dunhuang College, ADAS has opened a new page for education internationalization and President Tian encourages the board members to discuss about future cooperative academic programs as soon as possible as to realize full value of the alliance.


     Prof. Maske from University of Kentucky (UK) also made a brief introduction to the history of UK, in terms of academic programs, feature majors, student enrollment and faculty strength etc. Prof. Robert Jensen talked about the visual art major offered by UK at Art and Visual Design department in detail. Therewith, the attendees from UK and NNUDC had a further discussion about possible cooperation in terms of academic exchange programs, short-period cultural visits as well as visiting scholar programs.


     Prof. Kevin Zhen talked about the overall situation of BITZH and mentioned that multi-lateral cooperation should be planned between NNUDC and schools of BITZH such as the SINO-US College and school of art and design. At this time, BITZH has already designated one academic dean from SINO-US College to teach English for students at Dunhuang College. BITZH plans to send more foreign teachers to Dunhuang College in the future and held meaningful academic symposiums. Regarding the communication among the students, the ADAS schools has started exchange activities with themes related to the Silk Road.


     Later on, Prof. Zhen made a summary speech at the board meeting and emphasized the importance of cooperating and sharing to realize the original goal of joint development and progress. Under the era of globalization and digitalization, the universities should take every opportunity to make international connections and open up channels to share good education resources.
